Compliance with 2006 Building Regulations
The Baxi Ecogen is fully compliant with the 2006 Building Regulations that requires carbon emissions no greater than a regular Band B boiler. The Baxi Ecogen has lower carbon emissions than a regular Band A boiler.
Compliance with 2010 Building Regulations
New Building Regulations will outline specific requirements for micro-CHP. These requirements are based on the heating plant emissions rate (HPER) for the appliance in a particular property. HPER gives an indication of carbon emissions of the heating plant in a specific dwelling and is given in kg CO2 per kWh. Because the Ecogen is heat led, the HPER is for each kWh of heat generated, but the carbon value is for both heat and electric generation (as the electricity is a by-product).
There are different HPERs for different plant size ratios (PSR). The requirement set for micro-CHP in the 2010 Building Regulations is a maximum HPER of 0.230 (based on default 1.5 plant size ratio).
FIT
The Feed-in Tariff (FIT) is a financial support scheme introduced by the Government from April 2010 to encourage the uptake of small-scale microgeneration technologies that generate electricity, such as Baxi Ecogen.
FIT will consist of two parts, a generation tariff and an export tariff:
- Generation tariff - the energy supplier will make a fixed payment to the householder of 10p for every kWh of electricity they generate
- Export tariff - the energy supplier will make a fixed payment to the householder of 3p for every kWh of electricity exported back to the electricity grid
FIT will be paid over a minimum period of 10 years from the date the installation is first registered.
The biggest benefit to the householder is that they can use the electricity they generate on-site to offset some of the electricity they would otherwise have to buy from their energy supplier, therefore reducing their electricity bill. The more electricity that is used on site, the lower the running costs and payback.
MCS
Qualification for the Feed-in Tariff and other financial assistance requires the use of MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certified product and installation. MCS is designed to reassure consumers that the product and installation will meet minimum standards and achieve manufacturer's claims (e.g. performance).
The Baxi Ecogen is an MCS certified product. For more information on how to become an MCS certified installer or where to find one, please visit http://www.microgenerationcertification.org/
Baxi offers a training course that is recognised by BRE as providing the skills specific to Baxi Ecogen for MCS installer certification, in addition to standard plumbing and electrical competencies.
